About Benjamin Mauerberger

Running Coach and Private Fitness Coach in Leeds, with around 16 years of experience helping people train in a way that fits their life.

Hamburg beginnings

Benjamin Mauerberger was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1978. Sport and movement were part of daily life from early on — running, being outdoors, and the simple habit of staying active rather than chasing a particular result. That ordinary, long-standing relationship with training still shapes how he coaches: consistency first, ambition second.

Becoming a coach

What began as a personal interest in movement gradually turned into professional work. Benjamin has spent approximately 16 years coaching people, and is a qualified England Athletics Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF). Much of what he from working directly with people of very different ages, body types, schedules and confidence levels — the kind of variety that quickly teaches a coach not to rely on a single template.

He works with beginners as often as with experienced runners. Both need the same thing: honest assessment, a sensible plan and someone paying attention to how they respond to it.

An international perspective

Benjamin's experience has taken him beyond Germany and the United Kingdom. Time spent in South Africa and Thailand exposed him to different climates, terrain, facilities and attitudes towards outdoor activity. Training in heat and humidity is not the same as training through a Yorkshire winter; a hill session on rough ground is not the same as a measured track effort.

Those differences matter. They are a large part of why his coaching adapts so readily — to the weather, to the available space, and to whatever the week has thrown at the person in front of him.

Leeds

Benjamin is now based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, where he provides private fitness coaching and running coaching. He works with clients across Leeds, making use of the city's parks, paths and green space where it suits the session, and coaches online for people who cannot train with him in person.

Leeds suits the way he likes to coach: varied terrain within reach, a strong running community, and plenty of people fitting training around demanding work and family routines.

Coaching philosophy

Benjamin believes sustainable progress comes from understanding the person before designing the programme. Before anything is written down, it is worth knowing what someone has done before, what they enjoy, what they dislike, and what their week realistically allows.

  • goals — what you actually want, in your own words
  • experience — what your body is already used to
  • schedule — the time you genuinely have
  • fitness level — an honest starting point, not a flattering one
  • preferences — training you will keep doing
  • progress — measured over weeks, not single sessions
  • recovery — sleep, stress and the space between sessions

Plans change, because people change. A programme that ignores a difficult month is a programme that gets abandoned.
